Police officer interdicted over death of Central University Law student

The Ghana Police Service has interdicted General Corporal Robert Koranteng following preliminary investigations into the death of 23-year-old Central University law student, Ivan Baidoo, on the Tema Motorway.

The officer’s interdiction comes after a video related to the incident went viral on social media, prompting the Police Service to commence investigations into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

Ivan Baidoo, a second-year law student, died after an accident involving a YANGO-operated motorbike on the Tema Motorway on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at about 4 p.m.

According to a petition submitted by the deceased’s family to the Ghana Police Service, Ivan had booked a YANGO ride and boarded a motorbike with registration number M 26-AB 384 from Old Ashongman to East Legon.

The petition indicated that the motorbike rider, identified as Samuel Arthur Wesley, told investigators at the Airport Police Station that a member of a police patrol team riding another motorbike had pursued him from the UPSA-Legon junction towards the Tema Motorway.

The rider reportedly told investigators that the police patrol officer eventually caught up with them and “hit them from the back of the motorbike,” causing both him and Ivan to fall onto the road.

In a statement issued on Saturday, September 12, 2026, the Ghana Police Service said General Corporal Koranteng had been identified as the officer connected to the incident.

The Police Service said he had subsequently been removed from active duty pending the conclusion of investigations into the matter.
It further disclosed that the Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) had intensified efforts to establish the circumstances that led to Ivan Baidoo’s death.
