The Ghana Police Service has suspended five of its personnel after they were caught on viral videos engaging in behaviour that tarnished the Service’s reputation.

Some viral videos depict police officers stopping illegal miners and reportedly soliciting bribes instead of upholding the law at a galamsey site.

In a statement released by the Public Affairs Directorate on Monday, May 4, the Police indicated that the officers have been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau for investigation in accordance with internal disciplinary protocols.

“The Ghana Police Service has interdicted five (5) personnel sighted in viral videos engaging in acts that tend to put the name of the Service into disrepute,” the statement said.

The officers identified include Chief Inspector Matthew Blay, Chief Inspector Francis Arthur, Inspector Eric Osei of the Osu Police Station in Accra, Sergeant Amos Dery of the National Protection Unit, and Inspector Joseph Okyere Asabre of the Obuasi Police District.

According to the statement, the Service has reaffirmed its dedication to professionalism and accountability as investigations continue.

“The Ghana Police Service reiterates its commitment to professionalism, integrity, and accountability, and assures the public that appropriate action will be taken upon the conclusion of the investigation,” it added.
