The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) has disclosed that more than 1,000 people in the Bono Region contracted HIV between January and May 2026, raising concerns over the continued spread of the virus in the region.
Bono East and Ahafo Regional Coordinator of the Commission, Ahmed Ibrahim Bambilla, revealed the figures while calling for intensified public education and prevention measures to curb new infections.
He attributed the rise in cases largely to unprotected sexual activities and other high-risk behaviours, stressing the need for regular testing and responsible sexual practices.
Mr Bambilla also expressed concern about the high prevalence of HIV among key populations, particularly commercial sex workers and men who have sex with men, noting that these groups remain vulnerable to infection.
He said the Commission is expanding access to preventive interventions, including Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), to help reduce the number of new cases.
The Ghana AIDS Commission has therefore urged the public to know their HIV status through regular testing and to seek early treatment, stressing that adherence to antiretroviral therapy can significantly reduce transmission and improve the quality of life of persons living with HIV.
