The Ghana Education Service (GES) has made some changes to how students are placed into senior high schools after they take the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Now, students will choose eight schools instead of seven.
Out of these, they must pick two top (Category A) schools one should be a boarding school and the other a day school, preferably close to where they live.
The Director General of the GES, Ernest Kofi Davis, explained that this change is meant to reduce pressure on popular schools and make it easier for students to get placed fairly.
Another big change is about timing. The placement process will now start right after the BECE exams finish, instead of waiting for the results to come out.
This will give officials more time (about 19 to 20 weeks) to complete placements before schools reopen on September 18.
Students will also have more freedom to choose Category B and C schools, which should help spread students more evenly across different schools.
Overall, these changes are meant to make the system fairer, faster, and easier for students trying to get into senior high school.
