Dam spillage: My people are suffering — Weija-Gbawe MP appeals for urgent help

Residents in several communities within the Weija-Gbawe Municipality are battling severe flooding following the spillage of the Weija Dam, forcing the area’s Member of Parliament, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, to make an emotional appeal for urgent assistance for affected victims.

The flooding, triggered by the controlled opening of the Weija Dam spill gates by the Ghana Water Limited (GWL), has submerged homes, displaced families, and destroyed properties across low-lying communities in the constituency.

Speaking during a visit to some of the affected areas, the Weija-Gbawe MP, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, described the situation as heartbreaking, saying many residents had lost almost everything due to the floods.

“My people are suffering. Some have lost their homes, their belongings, and their livelihoods. This is not the time for politics; this is the time for support and urgent intervention,” he said.

The MP noted that several communities, including Tetegu, Oblogo, Bojo Beach, McCarthy Hills, and parts of Weija, had been heavily affected by the floodwaters.

According to him, many residents were trapped in their homes overnight, while others had to relocate to safer areas.

Jerry Ahmed Shaib appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), corporate institutions, religious bodies, and philanthropists to support victims with food, clothing, mattresses, and temporary shelter.

“We need immediate relief items. Children, women, and the elderly are sleeping in difficult conditions. The situation is very serious,” he stressed.
