A former police officer and his accomplice have each been sentenced to 25 years of hard labour in prison for conspiracy to commit robbery, as ruled by the Tamale High Court in connection with a prominent armed robbery case in the city.
On July 20, 2026, the court found G/Cpl Suleman Ayuba Gbana, who previously served at the Tamale District Police Station, and Adam Siba guilty after completing the trial.
The incident occurred on April 15, 2020, when armed attackers assaulted two foreign exchange dealers, Issahaku Sumaila and Baba Fuseini, at the entrance of the then Mum Hotel located on the Tamale-Bolgatanga Highway.
The assailants shot both individuals and escaped with GH¢530,000 in cash along with other foreign currencies.
Investigations conducted by the Northern Regional Police Command connected Gbana to the robbery syndicate after a detained suspect identified him as a member of the group.
A search of his home resulted in the recovery of a Ghana Police Service pistol, 10 rounds of ammunition, three pairs of handcuffs, and a brown handbag.
Authorities stated that the pistol had been issued to Gbana during a previous assignment as a police bodyguard, and he had unlawfully retained it following his reassignment.
Gbana was apprehended on April 23, 2020, and the Police Service suspended him pending the outcome of the trial.
The court acquitted and discharged a third suspect, Mohammed Iddrisu, of all charges.
Additionally, it ordered that the pistol and ammunition presented as evidence be returned to the Ghana Police.
