Chelsea interim coach Calum Macfarlane has provided a full update on squad fitness, selection decisions, and the club’s focus ahead of their crucial Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Macfarlane confirmed that the squad will undergo their final training session later in the day.

The session, he said, will help the technical team make clearer decisions on player availability for the match.

On injuries, he revealed that Romeo Lavia picked up a slight knock during preparations. However, the midfielder’s issue is not serious.

“Romeo took a slight knock in the build-up to the game, nothing major. With Romeo, we don’t want to take that risk. We need to be careful,” Macfarlane explained.

He also provided updates on defenders Benoît Badiashile and Mamadou Sarr, confirming that both players were not included in the squad for the upcoming match.

However, he added that they could return for the next two fixtures depending on recovery and fitness progress.

Macfarlane also spoke about young defender Levi Colwill, noting that the club is carefully managing his workload after recent strong performances.

A final decision on whether he will start will be made after the final training session.

A major highlight of the press conference was the confirmation and reaction to the appointment of Xabi Alonso as Chelsea’s new head coach.

Macfarlane described the news as exciting and praised Alonso’s reputation in world football.

“Really exciting news. Great coach with a massive pedigree. We’re all really looking forward to working with Xabi,” he said.

He added that Alonso’s achievements as both a player and coach have already earned him great respect within the squad. According to Macfarlane, the players are highly motivated to work under his leadership.

Macfarlane also confirmed that Alonso had already sent him a message, although he declined to disclose details of their conversation.

Looking ahead to the Tottenham fixture, Macfarlane stressed the importance of focus and results as the season approaches its final stage.

Chelsea, he said, must win their remaining matches to improve their league position and boost their chances of European qualification.

He also addressed the significance of the Chelsea–Tottenham rivalry, insisting that motivation is already high within the squad.

“The players have shown fight and heart in the last two games. Everyone knows about the rivalry,” he said. “We need to win the next two games to give ourselves the best chance.”
