France captain Kylian Mbappé has clarified his frustration during the restart of their game against Iraq, explaining that his reaction was caused by uneven pitch conditions rather than any serious complaint.
Speaking after the incident, Mbappé said the issue occurred when heavy rain affected the playing surface, making parts of the pitch difficult to use during the restart of the game.
He explained that the area where France was attacking was left waterlogged, while the section where they were defending had been cleared more thoroughly.
“The part of the pitch where we attacked was full of water,” Mbappé said. “They spent 20 minutes cleaning the part where we defend, but they didn’t spend any time cleaning the part where we attack.”
The forward added that his frustration came from what he saw as an imbalance in how the pitch was prepared during the interruption, rather than any deliberate wrongdoing by match officials or ground staff.
“I wanted them to spend the same time cleaning both sides of the pitch. But it’s not their fault, it’s not a big deal,” he said, downplaying the incident.
Heavy rain can often lead to uneven water accumulation on pitches, affecting ball movement, passing accuracy, and overall match rhythm.
In recent years, football governing bodies have placed greater emphasis on pitch quality and maintenance standards, especially at major tournaments like the World Cup, where consistent playing conditions are expected.
However, sudden weather changes can still create difficult situations for ground staff and referees.
Mbappé’s clarification suggests the matter was more about in-game frustration than a formal complaint, and he was keen to avoid escalating the issue after the match.
