More than half of Gen Zs (55%) and millennials (52%) say financial challenges have forced them to delay major life decisions, including starting a family, pursuing further education, or starting a business.
According to the Deloitte 2026 Gen Z and Millennial Survey, the cost of living remains the top concern for both generations for the fifth year in a row, ranking above other workplace and social issues.
The report noted that “financial strain has become a defining feature of how these generations work, live and plan for the future,” with nearly half of respondents saying they live paycheck to paycheck.
Housing costs are also shaping career choices.
About 69% of Gen Zs and 64% of millennials said the availability and affordability of housing influence where they choose to work and build their careers.
Despite these pressures, optimism remains strong, especially among Gen Zs.
Around 53% believe their personal finances will improve within the next year, compared with 45% of millennials.
The survey also found that only 6% of Gen Zs and millennials consider reaching a leadership position as their main career goal.
According to the report, many are discouraged by the potential tradeoffs associated with leadership roles.
Among respondents not prioritising leadership positions, the biggest concerns were stress and burnout, excessive responsibility, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Still, many remain open to leadership opportunities in the future.
About 76% of Gen Zs and 67% of millennials said they would consider pursuing senior leadership roles later in their careers.
The survey gathered responses from 22,595 people across 44 countries, including 14,384 Gen Z respondents and 8,211 millennials.
It was conducted online between November 24, 2025, and January 15, 2026.
