The Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri and Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has stated that illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, will be central to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) campaign for the upcoming 2028 general elections.
He emphasised that this issue transcends political boundaries, highlighting that the degradation of Ghana’s water bodies presents a significant threat to both livelihoods and survival.
In an interview with Citi News after he cast his vote at the Pep Sports Complex in Asamankese during the NPP’s Eastern Regional elections on Saturday, August 15, Mr. Annoh-Dompreh remarked that the party intends to prioritize the battle against illegal mining as a key campaign topic.
“Galamsey will form the core of the narrative of our campaign in 2028,” he stated.
He clarified that the party’s emphasis on galamsey is not merely a reaction to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) having utilized the issue in past campaigns, but rather due to its detrimental effects on the nation’s water resources.
“Water is life. If today the Birim River is destroyed and we can’t even get water, we need to talk about it. It is not just about campaign. It’s about survival, it’s about livelihood, it’s about humanity,” he added.
