Rashford returns to Manchester United as Barcelona declines permanent deal

England forward Marcus Rashford has officially returned to Manchester United after Barcelona decided not to activate the €30 million purchase option included in his loan agreement.

The clause expired on June 15, bringing an end to Rashford’s season-long loan spell at the Spanish giants and leaving his future uncertain ahead of the new campaign.

Reports from Spain indicate that while Barcelona remain interested in the 28-year-old attacker, the club is only willing to discuss another loan arrangement rather than a permanent transfer.

Rashford joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester United in July 2025 after a difficult period at Old Trafford. The deal included an option for the Catalan club to sign him permanently for €30 million at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Despite Barcelona’s decision, Rashford enjoyed a productive campaign in Spain. The England international contributed with goals and assists as Barcelona won the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup.

Reports suggest he registered 14 goals and 14 assists in nearly 50 appearances across all competitions.

However, Barcelona’s financial situation and the recent signing of winger Anthony Gordon appear to have influenced the club’s decision not to make the move permanent.

The arrival of Gordon increased competition in Rashford’s preferred position, reducing the need for another major investment.

Rashford is now set to report back to Manchester United, where questions remain over his long-term future.

The forward is still under contract with the Premier League club until 2028, but it is unclear whether he will be reintegrated into the squad or sold during the summer transfer window.

Several clubs across Europe are reportedly monitoring the situation, while Barcelona could still attempt to negotiate a fresh loan deal if Manchester United are open to discussions
