GFA recommends Carlos Queiroz stay as Black Stars coach

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has recommended that Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz remain in charge of the Black Stars on a long-term basis following an assessment of his performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum disclosed that the Association’s Executive Council, which is the highest decision-making body of the GFA, has agreed that Queiroz should continue as head coach.

“The council, which is the highest decision-making body, after assessing the performance of Coach Carlos Queiroz, have agreed that the coach is made to stay,” Mr Asante Twum said.

However, the recommendation does not automatically guarantee a contract extension for the experienced Portuguese coach.

According to the GFA Communications Director, the final decision rests with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation because the government will be responsible for financing Queiroz’s salary under any new agreement.

“The final decision does not rest on the FA. It must go to the ministry for them to look at the contract and approve because they will pay the salary of the coach,” he explained.

Queiroz was appointed in April 2026 on a four-month contract to lead Ghana at the FIFA World Cup after the departure of Otto Addo.

The GFA had initially indicated that his continuation would depend on his performance at the tournament.

The GFA’s decision comes as it seeks stability in the Black Stars’ technical set-up following several coaching changes in recent years.

Asante Twum said Queiroz has been informed of the Executive Council’s decision, although he could not confirm the coach’s response or provide details of the proposed financial terms.

The next stage will therefore involve discussions between the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and Queiroz over the terms of a possible long-term agreement.

Until those discussions are concluded and the Ministry gives its approval, Queiroz’s future as the permanent head coach of the Black Stars remains subject to further negotiations.
