Cristiano Ronaldo has once again been at the centre of discussion after comments from Portugal international Francisco Conceição about the national team’s style of play and how they approach passing decisions on the pitch.
Speaking in a recent interview, Conceição addressed the ongoing public debate about whether Portuguese players feel pressured to constantly pass to Ronaldo because of his reputation and goal-scoring record.
He made it clear that, in his view, the team does not operate under any strict instruction to feed any single player.
“For me, there is no player like Cristiano when it comes to his quality of scoring goals in that regard,” Conceição said, praising Ronaldo’s long-standing ability to decide matches and convert chances at the highest level.
However, he also stressed that Portugal’s attacking play is based on decision-making and positioning rather than obligation. “We don’t have the obligation to pass him the ball or the need to… I just pass the ball to whoever is better positioned unmarked,” he added.
Conceição’s remarks highlight the balance Portugal tries to maintain within the squad: respecting Ronaldo’s legendary status while still encouraging fluid teamwork and tactical discipline.
The comments come at a time when Portuguese players are under heavy criticism for not passing the ball to Cristiano Ronaldo after their first 2026 World Cup game against DR Congo ended in a 1-1 draw.
For Ronaldo, he remains the most experienced player in the Portugal squad and one of the highest goal scorers in football history, who continues to play a central leadership role in their team.
Despite being in the later stages of his career, he is still expected to be a key figure for Portugal in upcoming games due to his experience, movement in the box, and finishing ability.
