Mbappé focused on World Cup glory, not individual goal scoring record

Kylian Mbappé has reportedly told his France teammates that breaking the FIFA World Cup’s all-time goal scoring record is not his main objective, with the forward instead focused on winning the tournament and helping his country secure a historic third World Cup title.

According to French publication L’Équipe, Mbappé has made it clear internally that team success remains his top priority.

The French captain believes personal records will come naturally if France achieves its ultimate goal of lifting the trophy.

The 27-year-old has already established himself as one of the greatest World Cup performers of his generation.

After scoring a hat-trick in the 2022 World Cup final against Argentina, Mbappé moved closer to the tournament’s all-time scoring milestones and currently sits among the leading goal scorers in World Cup history.

Mbappé, who has already scored 19 World Cup goals, is seen as one of the few active players capable of challenging Lionel Messi who has scored 21 goals due to his age, consistency and performances on football’s biggest stage.

Despite the possibility of making history individually, Mbappé is said to be more concerned with adding another star to France’s national team badge.

Les Bleus are aiming to win their third World Cup title after triumphs in 1998 and 2018.

France’s current campaign has once again placed Mbappé at the centre of attention.

His pace, finishing ability and leadership have made him one of the biggest threats in the tournament, while his performances continue to fuel expectations that he could lead France to another major international success.

The forward’s approach reflects a team-first mentality that has been praised by supporters.

Rather than chasing personal achievements, Mbappé believes individual honours will follow if France reaches its objective.

France will play Morocco in the quarter-final stage of the tournament on July 9, 2026.
