Black Stars defender Marvin Senaya is expected to spend at least eight weeks on the sidelines after undergoing surgery to treat a hamstring injury suffered during Ghana’s Round of 32 match against Colombia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The injury occurred during Ghana’s narrow defeat to Colombia at the Kansas City Stadium on July 3, forcing the defender to end his tournament prematurely.
According to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), an MRI scan conducted in Kansas City confirmed a significant hamstring injury.
Following the diagnosis, the Black Stars’ medical team immediately began treatment before recommending surgery.
Senaya has since undergone a successful operation in Paris and has returned to his French club, AJ Auxerre, where he will continue his rehabilitation programme.
The GFA said it is working closely with Auxerre’s medical staff to ensure the defender receives the best possible care throughout his recovery process.
The 24-year-old is expected to be unavailable for at least two months, dealing a setback to both his club and the national team ahead of upcoming fixtures.
The Ghana Football Association, the Black Stars Management Committee, the technical team and his teammates have all wished Senaya a speedy recovery and expressed confidence that he will return stronger after completing his rehabilitation.
Senaya was one of Ghana’s standout performers during the World Cup, featuring in all four of the Black Stars’ matches.
His consistency and defensive contributions played an important role in Ghana’s journey to the Round of 32 before the team’s elimination by Colombia.
His absence will be a significant blow for AJ Auxerre as preparations continue for the new French football season, while the Black Stars will also be monitoring his recovery ahead of future international assignments.
Medical experts generally estimate that recovery from hamstring surgery can take several weeks, depending on the severity of the injury and the player’s rehabilitation progress.
The close cooperation between the GFA and AJ Auxerre is expected to help ensure Senaya’s safe return to competitive football.
