Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku has opened up about his time playing alongside Paul Pogba at Manchester United, admitting that the pair may have achieved much more if they had possessed the experience and mentality they have today.
Speaking in an interview, Lukaku reflected on their relationship during their years at Old Trafford and suggested that both players were still developing as professionals despite already being among the biggest names in world football.
“It was good, but I think we were too young at the time. We are both alphas,” Lukaku said when discussing his partnership with the French midfielder.
The former Manchester United forward went on to express regret that he and Pogba were unable to maximise their potential together during their time at the club.
“One day I’d like to sit down with him and tell him, if we had been together with the mentality we have today, it would have been dangerous. Very dangerous. Really, really dangerous. It hurts; it hurts a lot,” he added.
Lukaku and Pogba were teammates at Manchester United between 2017 and 2019 following Lukaku’s move from Everton.
During that period, the club won the UEFA Europa League and the EFL Cup under José Mourinho, but struggled to consistently challenge for the Premier League title.
Both players often found themselves under intense scrutiny from supporters and the media as Manchester United endured a difficult period compared to the club’s most successful years.
Pogba eventually left United in 2022 after a second spell at the club, while Lukaku departed in 2019 before going on to play for Inter Milan, Chelsea, Roma and Napoli.
Despite their individual successes elsewhere, Lukaku’s comments suggest there remains a sense of unfinished business regarding what the pair could have accomplished together at Old Trafford.
