The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully concluded a dramatic search-and-rescue operation following the collapse of a building at Adenta in Accra, rescuing four people who were trapped beneath the rubble.
The operation, which involved hours of painstaking work by emergency responders on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, saw firefighters, police officers, ambulance personnel, and other rescue agencies working around the clock to locate and extract victims from the debris.
According to the GNFS, the four survivors were pulled out alive after rescuers carefully cleared concrete slabs, twisted metal, and other debris while racing against time to reach those trapped beneath the collapsed structure.
Witnesses at the scene described tense moments as rescue teams listened for sounds and movements from underneath the rubble, using specialised equipment and coordinated search techniques to identify the location of the victims.
The survivors were immediately handed over to medical personnel and transported to nearby health facilities for treatment and further assessment.
Rescue officials said the operation was particularly challenging due to the unstable nature of the collapsed structure, which posed additional risks to both victims and emergency personnel.
The GNFS commended the efforts of all responding agencies and volunteers who assisted throughout the rescue exercise, noting that teamwork and swift intervention were crucial to saving lives.
The area has since been secured as authorities begin investigations into the cause of the collapse.
Authorities are expected to conduct a full assessment of the site and determine whether negligence, structural defects, or other factors contributed to the incident.
The GNFS has meanwhile urged developers, property owners, and contractors to strictly comply with building regulations to prevent similar incidents and protect lives and property.
