Guillermo Ochoa announces retirement after 2026 World Cup

Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has announced that he will retire from professional football after the conclusion of the current FIFA World Cup, bringing an end to a remarkable international career spanning two decades.

The 40-year-old shot-stopper, one of the most recognisable figures in Mexican football history, confirmed that this 2026 tournament will be his final appearance for both club and country, marking the end of a journey that began at the 2006 World Cup.

Ochoa has featured in six World Cups, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026, an achievement that places him among the most experienced players in the history of the competition.

Over the years, he became known for his outstanding performances on the world stage, particularly his shot-stopping displays against top international teams.

In his emotional statement, Ochoa explained that the Mexico national team has always been the central focus of his career and personal identity.

“The Mexico national team has always been my compass, my direction in my career, in my life. I can’t imagine my career without the national team,” he said.

He added that with his international journey now coming to an end, he sees this World Cup as the right moment to step away from the game entirely.

“Now my time with the national team is coming to an end, I don’t see much more meaning in football. I don’t see the point in keeping on playing. So… I’ve enjoyed every moment here. I gave it my all,” he said.

Ochoa’s retirement marks the conclusion of one of Mexico’s most iconic football careers. He has long been a key figure for El Tri, representing his country in multiple Gold Cup tournaments, World Cups, and international qualifiers.

His performances, particularly at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he delivered a standout display against the host nation, earned him global recognition and cemented his reputation as one of Mexico’s greatest goalkeepers.
