Liverpool’s new signing Ronald Araújo has revealed that his previous experience playing against Atlético Madrid helped his new teammates prepare for the Spanish side in their UEFA Champions League clash.
Liverpool came from behind to beat Atlético Madrid 2-1 at Anfield on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. Marcos Llorente gave the visitors an early lead before Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister completed the comeback for the English side.
Araújo, who joined Liverpool from Barcelona, said his previous meetings with Atlético gave him a good understanding of Diego Simeone’s tactical approach.
The Uruguay international explained that he shared some of his knowledge with his teammates before the match, including captain Virgil van Dijk.
“I have played against them multiple times while I was at Barcelona, so I know their secrets and a bit of their game pattern,” Araújo said.
“I told my teammates, especially Van Dijk, how they attack and how they defend. We used that against them and I could see the frustration in Simeone’s eyes.”
Araújo played an important role in Liverpool’s victory and was involved in the build-up to the equaliser.
The defender produced a clever backheel assist for Szoboszlai’s goal before Liverpool completed the comeback through Mac Allister.
The victory gave Liverpool three points in their opening Champions League match of the campaign and marked a strong start under new manager Andoni Iraola.
