Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has called on his players to raise their performance levels ahead of today’s FIFA World Cup clash against Croatia, insisting that only a strong display will be enough to secure victory.
Speaking before the Group L encounter at Lincoln Financial Field, Queiroz said his team is fully aware of the challenge posed by Croatia despite the European side’s 4-2 defeat to England earlier in the tournament.
According to the Ghana coach, the scoreline against England did not accurately reflect Croatia’s quality. He noted that after reviewing the match several times, he believed Croatia deserved a better result and remained one of the strongest teams in the competition. “We are on full alert,” Queiroz said. “The result against England does not show the true capabilities of Croatia. We know they are a very good team; we must be stronger and better if we want to win.”
The experienced coach reserved special praise for Croatia captain Luka Modric, describing him as one of the most outstanding footballers of recent years. He also highlighted the experience and quality within the Croatian squad, warning that Ghana must be prepared for a difficult contest.
Ghana head into the match after a victory over Panama and a goalless draw against England, leaving the Black Stars joint top of Group L with four points.
Despite the favourable position, Queiroz ruled out any plans to settle for a draw. He stressed that his philosophy has always been to play for victory and encouraged his players to approach the game with confidence and determination.
The coach said Ghana’s training sessions have focused on creating scoring opportunities, maintaining possession and improving overall consistency. He expressed hope that the team would produce its best football when it matters most.
Queiroz also urged his players to remain fully focused on the task ahead rather than being distracted by results elsewhere in the group.
“Croatia deserves our full respect,” he said. “We must fight, play our best football and do everything possible to finish top of the group. That is our objective.”
