Ghana must defend together to beat Croatia – Semenyo

Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo has stressed the importance of defensive discipline as the Black Stars prepare for their FIFA World Cup Group L match against Croatia.

Speaking ahead of the decisive encounter at Lincoln Financial Field, Semenyo said Ghana’s chances of being top of their group will depend on the team’s ability to remain organised and committed defensively throughout the entire match.

According to the Manchester City striker, the Black Stars have shown strong defensive discipline in their previous matches against Panama and England and must maintain the same approach against a talented Croatian side.
“The most important thing for the team is that we defend together for 90 minutes to get a result,” Semenyo said. “That is what we have to do.”

The 25-year-old explained that his experience in the English Premier League has helped him adapt to the demands of Ghana’s tactical approach under head coach Carlos Queiroz.
Semenyo noted that he has spent much of his club career working hard defensively and is comfortable playing whatever role is required to help the team succeed.

“I’ve been in teams where we had to defend a lot, so I’m used to it. It’s what the team needs and that’s what matters most,” he said.
The forward also revealed that the players are fully committed to Queiroz’s plans and are pleased with the direction the team is taking at the tournament.

He praised the unity within the squad but cautioned against becoming overconfident.
“We are all happy with what is happening at the moment, but we are not trying to get ahead of ourselves,” he said.

Ghana currently sits joint top of Group L with four points following a victory over Panama and a draw against England. A win over Croatia would guarantee a second place or even first as the team has already qualified for the round of 32.

Despite the promising position, Semenyo insisted the team remains focused solely on the task ahead.

“We know tomorrow is a very important game and we want to secure qualification,” he said. “Every player is ambitious and wants to reach the next round, but our focus is on Croatia. We don’t want to look too far ahead.”

The Black Stars will be hoping that their discipline, teamwork and determination can deliver another positive result.
