Tottenham Hotspur stuck in bottom three after 1-0 defeat to Sunderland

Tottenham Hotspur’s struggles deepened with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Sunderland on Sunday, April 12, a result that leaves the North London side stuck in the relegation zone.

To add to the woes of the club, Cristian Romero was forced off in tears after a heavy collision with Sunderland goalkeeper Antonín Kinský. This incident halted play for eight minutes and cast a shadow over an already difficult afternoon for the Spurs.

The injury scare adds to growing concerns for Tottenham Hotspur, whose relegation fears deepened following the narrow loss. Stuck in the bottom three, Spurs are now grappling with both poor form and mounting fitness issues at a critical stage of the 2025/2026 English Premier League season.

Playing at home, Sunderland made their chances count in a tightly contested game, edging out Tottenham Hotspur despite not statistically dominating in any phase.

Sunderland registered just two shots on target, while Tottenham managed seven efforts on target without finding the breakthrough. The visitors also fired eight shots off target compared to Sunderland’s two, underlining their wastefulness in front of goal. Tottenham forced more set-piece opportunities with six corner kicks to Sunderland’s two and delivered eight crosses, but lacked the cutting edge to convert their attacking pressure

Possession was fairly even, with Sunderland holding a slight edge at 53 percent to Tottenham’s 48 percent. The hosts also showed resilience defensively, with their goalkeeper Antonín Kinský making seven crucial saves compared to just one from Tottenham’s keeper.

The defeat marks a second straight loss for new head coach Roberto De Zerbi since taking charge, adding to the growing pressure around the club’s direction. Tottenham’s season has been marked by inconsistency, with defensive lapses and missed chances becoming a recurring theme that has now dragged them into the bottom three.

Their struggles have also been compounded by the absence of key players, including Ghana international Mohammed Kudus, whose injury has sidelined him in recent weeks. Kudus’ creativity and attacking influence have been sorely missed, with Tottenham lacking spark in the final third.

Both sides committed a similar number of fouls, Sunderland with 14 and Tottenham 15, while each team picked up three yellow cards in a physical encounter. Tottenham had more throw-ins and goal kicks, reflecting their territorial play, but ultimately failed to translate that into goals.

For Sunderland, the victory provides a vital boost at home. For Tottenham, however, the concerns continue to mount as their early-season form threatens to spiral into a full-blown relegation battle.
