Curaçao’s preparations for their first FIFA World Cup appearance have been thrown into confusion after head coach Fred Rutten resigned just one month before the tournament begins.
The Curaçao Football Federation confirmed on Monday, May 11, that the Dutch coach stepped down following what it described as “constructive discussions” with federation officials.
The decision comes after the team lost both friendly matches under Rutten, including a heavy 5-1 defeat to Australia and a 2-0 loss to China.
Rutten only took charge in February after veteran Dutch coach Dick Advocaat resigned due to his daughter’s health condition.
However, reports in the Netherlands suggest there had been growing tension within the squad, with several players hoping for Advocaat’s return ahead of the World Cup.
Curaçao are set to make history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after becoming the smallest nation ever to qualify for the tournament.
The Caribbean side secured qualification in November 2025 after a goalless draw against Jamaica.
The federation is now expected to turn again to Advocaat, who is reportedly the favourite to return to the dugout.
The 78-year-old coach guided Curaçao to qualification and could become the oldest manager in World Cup history if he returns for the tournament.
Reports indicate that improvements in his daughter’s health have opened the door for a comeback.
A press conference has been scheduled to explain the federation’s next steps as Curaçao continue preparations for their Group E matches against Germany, Ecuador and Ivory Coast.
