Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia says the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) cannot point to any major new policies introduced in 2025 that are responsible for Ghana’s current economic stability.
Speaking to Minority Members of Parliament after Parliament resumed, Bawumia questioned the government’s claims that it is fully responsible for the recent improvements in the economy.
He said if the NDC is asked to mention three new policies introduced this year that helped stabilise the economy, they would struggle to do so.
According to him, the current economic progress is partly due to policies started by the previous government, especially the gold-for-reserves programme.
He explained that the programme helped strengthen the economy and should not be ignored when discussing the country’s recent stability.
Bawumia also said economic stability should not only be measured by numbers and statistics. He stressed that the real focus should be on whether ordinary Ghanaians are feeling any improvement in their daily lives through lower prices and better living conditions.
He encouraged Minority MPs to continue speaking about the struggles citizens are facing and to use Parliament to raise concerns about areas where people are still not seeing economic relief.
He also praised the Minority for drawing attention to the difficulties faced by farmers and urged them to continue highlighting challenges in other sectors as well.
Meanwhile, the government has pointed to signs such as the stability of the Ghana cedi and slowing inflation as proof that the economy is recovering.
