GHS launches probe into death of pregnant woman at Kasoa hospital

The Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has opened an official investigation into the death of a pregnant woman at Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital after rising public concern about what happened.

The woman, identified as Abigail Opoku, reportedly died on Sunday, April 26, 2026.

Her death has sparked widespread attention, with some people claiming she could not receive a caesarean section because there were no available beds in the hospital’s recovery ward.

In response, regional health authorities have set up an independent committee to look into the case.

Officials say the team will carefully review both the medical decisions made and any system challenges that may have played a role in the situation.

“The Central Regional Health Directorate wishes to inform the general public that it has become aware of the unfortunate maternal death that occurred at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family, loved ones, and all those affected by this tragic loss,” the statement said.

The committee includes experts from the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and the Trauma and Specialist Hospital.

It also brings in representatives from the Regional Coordinating Council, the Attorney-General’s Department, and the Regional Health Directorate.

Health officials have asked the team to carry out a thorough and fair investigation.

They expect the findings to guide possible administrative actions and improvements in the healthcare system.

Authorities have urged the public to stay calm and allow the investigators to do their work without interference.

The Directorate has again stressed its commitment to protecting patients and improving the quality of care, especially in maternal health.

This comes as concerns grow about conditions in public health facilities. The statement was signed by the Central Regional Director of Health Service, Alberta Adjebeng Biritwum-Nyarko.
