The Ministry of Education has condemned the alleged sexual abuse of a 14-year-old student with autism at Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School (BOGISS) in the Upper East Region.

In a statement dated August 20, 2026, the Ministry expressed concern over the reported incident, which allegedly involved two watchmen employed at the school.

The Ministry described the alleged abuse as a serious breach of the trust placed in adults responsible for protecting students, particularly vulnerable children.

It stressed that schools have a duty to provide a safe environment where students can learn and develop without fear of abuse or exploitation.

The Ministry also made it clear that the student, as a minor, should not be blamed or held responsible for any sexual abuse allegedly committed against her by an adult.

Following the incident, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take immediate steps to address the matter.

The GES has been instructed to investigate the allegations and submit a report on its findings. It has also been directed to ensure that the student receives the necessary medical care and counselling to support her recovery.

In addition, the Ministry has ordered the immediate restoration of the student’s boarding status.
