Director of Communications for the 2024 Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has warned that Ghana risks descending into dangerous retaliatory politics if state institutions continue to be perceived as tools for targeting political opponents.
Speaking during a political discussion amid growing tensions over the arrest and investigation of some former government officials linked to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Aboagye cautioned that the country could enter a cycle of political revenge if fairness and neutrality are not maintained.
According to him, the current trend where opposition figures are allegedly being targeted could create a situation where future governments may also feel compelled to respond in a similar fashion once political power changes hands.
“We cannot continue to run the country on ‘you do me, I do you’ politics,” he stated.
Mr. Aboagye further warned that if the situation continues, supporters of the NPP would expect similar actions when former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia eventually returns to power.
“When Dr. Bawumia comes and people also expect that same treatment to be meted out to others, then where are we taking this country to?” he questioned.
He stressed that governance should not become an endless cycle of political retaliation, intimidation, and revenge, arguing that such practices could damage Ghana’s democratic image and weaken confidence in public institutions.
According to him, democracy can only survive when institutions operate independently, and justice is applied fairly regardless of political affiliation.
