Two military officers and a businessman have appeared before an Accra Circuit Court over their alleged involvement in a robbery operation at East Legon in Accra, which reportedly resulted in the loss of cash and valuables worth more than GH¢1 million.
The accused persons are Eugene Akurugu, also known as “Bullet,” and Emmanuel Arko, both aircraftmen of the Ghana Armed Forces, and businessman Justin Yaw Oduro.
They have been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and four counts of robbery. All three pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them.
The court was informed that seven other suspects, identified as Ariyo Oluwa Femi, Hajia Baby, Aikins, Abotchie, Gatiso, Yaw, and Mohammed, are currently at large, with police continuing efforts to arrest them.
According to the prosecution, the case began in December 2025 when a car dealer, Gbe Atse Hubert, and a witness, Abdul Majid Inikly Ibrahim, were allegedly targeted in a planned operation under the guise of purchasing a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon.
The complainant was said to have been linked through a contact in Côte d’Ivoire to Mohammed, who allegedly claimed to have access to the vehicle in Ghana.
Arrangements were subsequently made for a meeting at Kalabash Restaurant at Adjiringanor in East Legon, where the vehicle was presented, and a price of 50 million CFA francs (over GH¢1.07 million) was agreed.
On December 22, 2025, the complainants reportedly went to finalise the transaction but were directed by Oduro to another location to meet another accomplice.
While en route, they were allegedly ambushed by armed men, including the two soldiers, who were said to be dressed in military camouflage and armed with pistols.
The attackers allegedly made away with 50 million CFA francs, an additional 2 million CFA francs (about GH¢92,950), and several mobile phones, including an iPhone XR, Samsung A16, and Oppo Reno 11. The victims were also reportedly assaulted during the incident.
Following a report to the police, investigations led to the arrest of Samuel Kobi in Kumasi after he was found in possession of one of the stolen phones.
He allegedly told investigators he received the phone from his sister, Susana Kobi, who was later arrested. Susana, however, reportedly claimed the phone was given to her by her husband, businessman Justin Yaw Oduro.
Further intelligence-led operations on May 24, 2026, led to the arrest of Oduro, Akurugu and Arko. Police say the suspects were allegedly preparing another similar operation at the time, targeting a prospective buyer.
The complainants later identified the accused persons during identification procedures at the police station.
During proceedings, Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu told the court the accused were flight risks, noting that the alleged robbery occurred in December 2025 but arrests were only made months later through intelligence operations.
Defence counsel, however, argued that the accused persons had fixed residences within the court’s jurisdiction and were not likely to abscond, adding that the two soldiers had been serving the nation before their arrest.
The court nevertheless granted each accused person bail in the sum of GH¢600,000 with three sureties, one of whom must justify the bail with landed property.
The accused have also been ordered to deposit their passports at the court registry. The case has been adjourned to July 6, 2026, while investigations continue and efforts are intensified to arrest the remaining suspects.
