Volta teacher unions back nationwide strike, as action enters week 2

The Volta Regional leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) has endorsed the ongoing nationwide strike by the three teacher unions.

The industrial action, which began on September 25, 2026, was triggered by what the unions describe as persistent delays in addressing key concerns affecting teachers’ conditions of service.

At a press conference in the Volta Region, the unions outlined three major demands, including the conclusion of negotiations for a new collective agreement, automatic placement of promoted teachers with payment of arrears, and the implementation of the 20 percent Deprived Area Allowance.

Regional Secretary of GNAT, Felix Owusu Ansah, said the existing collective agreement had expired, while negotiations for a new one remained incomplete despite engagements with government and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

He urged authorities to conclude and implement the agreement without further delay.

The unions also criticised delays in placing teachers who passed promotion examinations in December 2025 and February 2026 on their appropriate salary scales and paying their outstanding arrears.

They further demanded the implementation of the 20 percent allowance for teachers serving in deprived and hard-to-reach communities, as provided under the existing collective agreement.

PRETAG Regional Chairman Solomon Kwame Yerenkyi said delays in promotion processes had caused affected teachers significant financial losses.

NAGRAT Regional Chairman William Kwame Ahiave said teachers would remain off duty until their concerns were addressed.

The Volta unions have consequently directed teachers in the region to fully comply with the strike pending further communication from their national leadership.
