TRAFFITECH-GH: MTTD establishes 9 centres for traffic fine appeals

The Ghana Police Service has established about nine contesting centres across the country to handle complaints from motorists who dispute electronic traffic violation notices issued under the TRAFFITECH-GH system.

Motorists will have 14 days to challenge the notices, either online or by visiting any of the designated centres for assistance, according to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).

ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director of Education, Research and Training at the MTTD, disclosed this during media engagement on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

He said the system provides an opportunity for motorists who believe they have been wrongly cited to present their reasons and supporting evidence before the matter proceeds further.

ACP Obeng explained that motorists could submit their complaints online and select a contesting office where they would like the issue addressed.

He added that the centres had been equipped with systems that connect them to the MTTD’s back office in Accra, allowing officers to retrieve relevant records and investigate complaints.

According to him, each case would be examined on its merits, with the police reviewing available documents and verifying claims before deciding whether a traffic notice should be withdrawn.

ACP Obeng cited the example of a vehicle reported stolen before it was captured by the automated system committing a traffic offence.

In such circumstances, he said, officers would contact the police station where the theft was reported and examine evidence, including entries in the station diary, to establish the facts.

“If that is proven documentarily and evidentially, then we have a process of pulling it down,” he said.

The contesting mechanism forms part of the implementation of TRAFFITECH-GH, which seeks to improve traffic monitoring and enforcement through technology while providing motorists with a channel to challenge potentially erroneous penalties.
