The Ghana Police Service has arrested 44 suspects and dismantled an alleged drug network operating in Kumasi and its surrounding areas, with investigators alleging that the group targeted university students and young people.
The arrests were made during a special operation conducted by the Police Intelligence Directorate and other security units as part of efforts to clamp down on drug trafficking and abuse among the youth.
According to the Police, the suspects were involved in the distribution of illicit substances, including cannabis and other narcotic-related products, to students and young persons within the Kumasi metropolis.
A statement from the Ghana Police Service said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt criminal networks involved in the supply and distribution of narcotics.
The Police indicated that several quantities of suspected narcotic substances and other items believed to be linked to the activities of the suspects were retrieved during the operation.
“The Ghana Police Service remains committed to protecting young people and preventing criminal elements from exploiting students through the distribution of illicit drugs,” the statement said.
The Police said preliminary investigations revealed that the network had established channels for supplying drugs within some university communities and other areas frequented by students.
The suspects are currently assisting investigators as the Police continue efforts to identify other individuals connected to the alleged network.
Authorities have assured the public that those found culpable will be processed in accordance with the law.
The Police further appealed to parents, educational institutions and community leaders to collaborate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities linked to drug trafficking and abuse.
