The Minority in Parliament has raised questions over the whereabouts of the driver of the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, and the secretary at the office of the Ministry’s Chief Director.
According to the Minority, the two travelled to the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as part of the 431 people sponsored by the government to attend the tournament. The caucus says the two have not yet returned to Ghana.
The Minority’s claim comes after the government said all 431 people it sponsored for the World Cup had returned to Ghana.
Speaking to journalists after a briefing by the Ministry, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, said the caucus asked the Sports Minister about his driver, identified as Mr Okyere.
Mr Assafuah said Mr Adams denied knowing anyone by the name of Mr Okyere, although he admitted that he could know the person.
The Minority also mentioned a secretary at the office of the Chief Director, identified as Christie. The caucus claims she also travelled to the United States under the government-sponsored programme but has not returned to Ghana.
The Minority is now calling on the Minister to release the names and passport numbers of all 431 people who were sponsored to attend the World Cup.
The caucus says publishing the details will help confirm whether all the sponsored travellers actually returned to Ghana.
“We are asking the Minister to publish all the 431 people, their passport number and their names as to whether these people actually returned back to Ghana or not,” Mr Assafuah said.
He also questioned the government’s claim that all 431 sponsored travellers had returned, pointing to the two people named by the Minority.
“If the government says that all the 431 people that were sponsored by the government all returned back to Ghana, that cannot be the case,” he said.
