Sunyani prison empowers inmates through pig farming

Sunyani Central Prison has introduced a piggery project to provide inmates with practical farming skills while increasing food production and creating an additional source of income for the facility.

The project is part of the Ghana Prisons Service’s ‘Think Prisons 360 Degrees’ agenda, which focuses on rehabilitating inmates through vocational training and agricultural programmes.

The prison has started the project with six pigs, comprising three mature pigs and three piglets.

Authorities say inmates will receive hands-on training in pig farming, allowing them to develop livestock management skills that can help them secure self-employment after completing their sentences.

The project is also expected to generate revenue for the prison and provide quality pork to support the nutritional needs of both inmates and staff.

Prison officials believe the initiative demonstrates their commitment to rehabilitation by giving inmates practical skills that will improve their chances of rebuilding their lives and successfully reintegrating into society after their release.
