Professor Christian Agyare has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), effective August 1, 2026.

His appointment has been welcomed by many within Ghana’s academic and health sectors, with supporters praising his strong background in research, pharmacy, and higher education leadership.

Professor Agyare currently serves as the Provost of the KNUST College of Health Sciences and is widely recognised as one of Ghana’s leading biomedical researchers.

Over the years, he has built a reputation for excellence in pharmaceutical microbiology, medicinal plant research, and natural product studies.

An old student of Prempeh College, Professor Agyare, continued his academic journey at KNUST, where he obtained both his Bachelor of Pharmacy and Master of Pharmacy degrees.

He later earned a doctorate in natural sciences from the University of Münster in Germany through a DAAD scholarship.

His academic career has also taken him to some of the world’s respected research institutions. He conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco, and the Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research.

His work has focused mainly on antimicrobial agents from medicinal plants, wound healing therapies, antibiotic resistance, and the scientific study of traditional African medicine.

Professor Agyare has contributed greatly to academic research, publishing more than 150 peer-reviewed articles as well as several books and book chapters.

His work has earned thousands of academic citations globally, making him one of Ghana’s most influential researchers in the pharmaceutical field.

In 2025, he was honoured with the “Academic Pharmacist of the Year” award at the maiden Pharma Excellence Awards organised by the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana.

The award recognised his contributions to pharmaceutical education, mentorship, research, and health policy development.

Beyond research and teaching, Professor Agyare is also known for advocating the preservation and scientific development of traditional medicinal knowledge across Ghana and Africa.
