The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has submitted a more than 200-page report to Parliament on the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa following reported xenophobic attacks.
The report was provided in response to a Right to Information (RTI) request filed by Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Committee.
According to a source at the Parliamentary Committee, the Ministry submitted the documents electronically on Friday, September 18, 2026.
The report contains details on more than 1,900 Ghanaians who were evacuated, including their contact details and signatures.
The evacuation exercise started on May 27 and ended on September 4, 2026. A total of 1,964 Ghanaians were brought back to Ghana at a cost of GH¢49.72 million.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa earlier disclosed the figures at a press conference on September 7.
Out of the total amount, GH¢38.84 million was spent on chartered flights, commercial airline tickets, transportation, food, accommodation and medical care.
Another GH¢10.8 million was used for reintegration and transportation allowances. An additional GH¢84,274 was spent on bringing the remains of two Ghanaian nationals back to the country.
The government provided GH¢33.72 million for the exercise, while Engineers and Planners contributed GH¢16 million.
The RTI request was filed while the evacuation was still ongoing. The Minority had asked for financial and operational records covering flights, procurement, payments and reintegration support.
The Minority has said it does not oppose the evacuation but wants documents to show how the funds were spent. These include invoices, receipts, contracts, payment vouchers and procurement records.
In a related development, the Ministry has asked the Auditor-General to conduct a special audit of evacuation exercises carried out by the Ministry from 2017 to date.
