The planned 20 percent increase in public transport fares is expected to be a key topic of discussion when transport sector leaders meet with the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, today.
The meeting, scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at the Ministry of Transport’s conference room, will bring together representatives of the Ghana Roads Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and other transport industry stakeholders.
Sources within the transport sector say the discussions will focus not only on the proposed fare increase but also on the broader challenges affecting commercial transport operators across the country.
These include rising fuel prices, increasing costs of vehicle spare parts, maintenance expenses, and other operational difficulties that continue to place financial pressure on transport businesses.
The meeting comes amid growing public interest and debate over the proposed fare adjustment. Transport operators have argued that an increase in fares has become necessary because of the steady rise in the cost of running transport services.
According to them, higher fuel prices and the increasing cost of vehicle maintenance have significantly affected their operations, making it difficult to maintain current fare levels.
Earlier, the GPRTU and some transport operators announced plans to introduce a 20 percent fare increase nationwide. However, the announcement was met with mixed reactions from commuters and industry observers.
The GRTCC later clarified that no final decision had been reached regarding the proposed increment. The council explained that the established consultation process involving transport unions, regulators, and the Ministry of Transport had not yet been completed, making it premature to confirm any fare adjustment.
Industry stakeholders are expected to use today’s meeting to present concerns about issues affecting the transport sector. These concerns include the high cost of fuel, taxes on vehicle spare parts, maintenance expenses, and other factors that they believe are threatening the sustainability of public transport services.
The outcome of the discussions is expected to provide clarity on the future of transport fares. A decision could be reached to approve the proposed increase, review the percentage being requested, or postpone any adjustment until further consultations are completed.
Many commuters across the country are awaiting the outcome of the meeting, as any change in transport fares will have a direct impact on daily travel costs.
