Over ten students have been arrested in connection with violent clashes between Okuapeman Senior High School and Mount Sinai Senior High School in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The arrests follow reprisal attacks involving students from the two schools, during which several structures on both campuses were burnt and destroyed in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
Speaking in an interview, the Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Owusu-Bempah, said some students fled their schools when the police arrived but warned that escaping would not shield them from arrest.
“We have apprehended them. And there are more,” he said, adding that the police were compiling a comprehensive list of all those involved in the violence.
He further disclosed that investigations had uncovered information suggesting that some teachers may have encouraged students to attack students from the other school.
According to DCOP Owusu-Bempah, the police have obtained the names of teachers allegedly connected to the incident and will take action if investigations confirm their involvement.
“We have the names of the teachers. They have nowhere to go. At the appropriate time, we will arrest all of them, and their names will be published,” DCOP Owusu-Bempah warned in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Eyewitness News on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
The Eastern Regional Police Commander assured the public that anyone found to have participated in the violence would face the law. He also urged students to return to school and cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
He cautioned against interference in the police process, warning that such actions could undermine efforts to restore calm and hold those responsible accountable.
Six students of Okuapeman SHS were injured during the incident and taken to hospital. The school’s Headmaster said four had been treated and discharged, while two were still on admission as of Wednesday.
The cause of the clashes has yet to be established. Police investigations are underway to determine what triggered the confrontation and identify all persons responsible for the violence.
