Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah remains in custody after NPP election violence

The communications team of broadcaster and political commentator Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah has confirmed that he remains in police custody following his arrest during disturbances linked to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency executive elections in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency.

In a statement issued by Kwame Afrifa Mensah on behalf of the team, it said the broadcaster was arrested at about 7:40 am on Sunday, July 12 and later transferred to the Asante Mampong Divisional Police Command, where he is currently being held.

The statement explained that Afrifa’s family, legal representatives and campaign team were not immediately informed about his location after the arrest, a development that reportedly caused concern among his supporters.

According to the team, he was moved to the Asante Mampong Police Command at about 5:00 pm, where he remains in custody while awaiting what it described as “further lawful processes.”

The communications team also rejected claims that Afrifa arrived at the election grounds with a violent group.

It stated that the supporters who accompanied him were unarmed and had no intention of causing any disturbance.

The statement further denied allegations linking Afrifa to the formation or operation of a vigilante group, describing such claims as false.

The team alleged that four members of Afrifa’s group sustained serious gunshot injuries during the incident and are currently receiving medical attention.

It appealed to supporters of the broadcaster and members of the public to remain calm and respect the law while the matter goes through the appropriate legal channels.

Afrifa’s arrest followed violent scenes during the NPP’s constituency executive elections at Afigya Sekyere East in the Ashanti Region on July 11, 2026.

Reports indicate that the broadcaster had gone to the election venue to present a court injunction seeking to stop the exercise over concerns that some names had allegedly been removed from the delegates’ register.

The situation reportedly became tense and later turned chaotic, forcing the police to intervene.

Afrifa was subsequently arrested as authorities moved to restore calm.

The broadcaster is also reported to have political ambitions, with indications that he is interested in contesting the parliamentary seat of the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency in the future.
