NPP race: Wontumi campaign team picks up nomination forms on his behalf

The campaign team of former Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has picked up nomination forms on his behalf as he prepares to take part in the party’s internal elections.

The team collected the forms on Thursday as part of the process to complete his nomination, although Mr Boasiako is currently serving a prison sentence.

“This is simply to formally complete the nomination process on his behalf,” the campaign team said in a statement.

The team said it remains confident about his campaign and expressed its determination to continue the process.

“With God and the people behind us, we move.”

The campaign team also thanked Wontumi’s supporters for their prayers, commitment and continued support.

The development comes as the NPP prepares for its 2026 National Officers Elections, with aspirants going through different stages of the nomination process.

Mr Boasiako remains a well-known figure within the NPP, particularly in the Ashanti Region, and continues to enjoy support from sections of the party despite his incarceration.

His campaign activities have been carried out by his supporters and campaign team while he remains in prison.

Meanwhile, the NPP has extended the deadline for aspirants to submit their completed nomination forms for the 2026 National Officers Elections by two days.

The party’s National Officers Elections Committee (NOEC) announced that the deadline, which was originally Thursday, August 27, has now been moved to Saturday, August 29, 2026.

The committee said the decision was taken because of the “significant level of interest” in the elections.

In a statement dated Friday, August 21, NOEC said 44 aspirants had picked up nomination forms as of the close of nomination activities on Thursday, August 20.

According to the committee, the extension will give aspirants enough time to complete and submit their forms and allow the documents to be properly checked.

“The period for the filing of completed nomination forms for the 2026 National Officers Elections has been extended by two (2) days,” the committee said.

The extension will not affect the other stages of the election timetable.

Vetting is still expected to begin on August 31 and continue until September 3. The results of the vetting will be published on September 5, while aspirants will have the opportunity to appeal between September 6 and 7.

The NPP’s National Officers Elections are scheduled to take place on October 3, 2026.

NOEC said it is committed to ensuring that the elections are conducted in a fair, transparent, orderly and credible manner, with all aspirants given an equal opportunity to participate.

The nomination process began on August 17.

Under the revised timetable, completed forms will be filed between August 23 and 29, followed by vetting from August 31 to September 3.

The results will be published on September 5, with the election of national officers set for October 3.
