The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA), Binduri chapter, has demanded an independent and transparent inquiry into the death of Issaka Shabani, also known as “Culture”, amid rising concerns regarding security operations in Binduri and Bawku.
This demand was made during a press conference held in Bolgatanga on Monday, September 7, 2026, under the theme “Call for Professionalism, Fairness and Accountability in Security Operations in Binduri and Bawku.”
MAYA challenged certain elements of the Ghana Police Service’s narrative regarding Mr. Shabani’s death, claiming that he was taken from his home at dawn on September 3, 2026, transported to the Binduri Primary School vicinity, and subsequently shot in the legs before being removed along with three other individuals.
The group is insisting on an independent investigation that includes forensic and ballistic analyses to clarify the circumstances surrounding his death.
MAYA also voiced concerns about what it termed the reliance on unverified social media claims to guide security operations in Binduri and Bawku. It urged security agencies to independently validate such information prior to taking action.
The association further dismissed allegations connecting Mark Agingre to a purported bus attack at Avondago on September 4, labeling the assertion as false.
MAYA asserted that Mamprusi communities have endured destruction and displacement since the conflict spread to Binduri in 2021, including the alleged devastation of Gumyoko.
The group has called for investigations into perceived bias in security operations, strict compliance with constitutional human rights protections, and professional and impartial conduct from security agencies.
It has appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, Chief of Defence Staff, Upper East Regional Security Council, and CHRAJ for intervention.
MAYA stated that while it supports lawful security operations, it emphasizes that sustainable peace necessitates justice, fairness, and respect for human life.
