ECG boss apologises for unreliable power supply

The Acting Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Kwame Kpekpena, has apologised to Ghanaians for the recent unstable power supply that has been affecting homes and businesses.

His apology comes after many parts of the country have been experiencing frequent power cuts and fluctuations, causing frustration and, in some cases, damage to electrical appliances and business operations.

Speaking to journalists in Accra on April 20, Mr Kpekpena said the company understands the situation and is working to fix the problems affecting the power system.

“To every Ghanaian customer who has endured inconvenient and prolonged power outages, we sincerely apologise. We want you to know that we have heard your voice, and that addressing the reliability challenges is our singular operational priority,” he said.

He admitted that ECG has not always responded quickly enough or communicated well with customers, and described this as unacceptable.

“We also acknowledge that, in some instances, our communication and response times have fallen short of expectations. This is not acceptable. We have taken deliberate steps to address these gaps, including implementing measures to enhance operational performance, improve response times, and strengthen customer engagement,” he stated.

Mr Kpekpena said the company is putting in the needed resources to fix the issues and will keep the public informed about their progress.

“The challenges we face are real and complex, and in some cases stem from years of underinvestment, resulting in pockets of outages and low voltage. But we are not standing still. We have a plan, we have a schedule, and we are committing all our resources to execute it,” he said.

He also added that ECG is open to being held accountable and welcomes the media’s role in keeping the company on track as it works to improve power supply across the country.
