President John Mahama is expected to lead a special Cabinet meeting on Thursday, May 14, to discuss key proposals from Ghana’s constitutional review process.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu announced the development and said the government has already prepared a draft position paper after a detailed assessment by the Attorney General and the President’s legal advisers.
According to him, President Mahama earlier instructed the legal team to carefully study the constitutional review committee’s report before the government takes an official stance on the recommendations.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that the review process has now been completed, and Cabinet members will meet to decide the government’s final position on the proposals.
“So Thursday, 14th May, there will be a special cabinet session chaired by the president himself to consider the draft position paper,” he said.
He noted that the outcome of the meeting will shape the government’s official response to the constitutional review recommendations.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu also stated that the approved document will later be released to the public so citizens can understand the government’s position on the issues raised.
He explained that the constitutional review committee requires the government to issue a position paper rather than a white paper, which is usually associated with commissions of inquiry.
According to him, Cabinet’s main focus during the meeting will be the constitutional review report, although ministers may also discuss other national matters.
He further revealed that the government plans to move to the implementation stage once Cabinet approves the document.
This process will include the formation of an implementation committee to oversee the next steps.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu added that the government will study each recommendation carefully. He said some proposals may be accepted fully, others could be adjusted, while a few may be rejected depending on practicality and other important factors.
He also assured the public that the government will continue engaging citizens after Cabinet completes its deliberations on the report.
