The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns about the Bank of Ghana, warning that increasing political involvement could weaken the bank’s independence and public trust.
Their reaction follows an incident at Parliament where members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), along with some individuals who are not Members of Parliament, organised a press conference within the parliamentary premises.
They used the platform to discuss the Bank of Ghana’s audited accounts, a move that has sparked debate.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, May 3, the Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, criticised the action.
He described it as unusual and not appropriate for such a setting.
He stressed that allowing political influence to shape the central bank’s work could create long-term problems.
He called on the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, the Board, and government officials to pay close attention to the situation.
In his view, the central bank must operate without pressure from any political group to maintain its credibility.
“The Governor, the Board and the government should take note that this politicisation of the central bank will create issues for the operational independence and credibility of the bank going forward. This must stop.”
He further warned that giving in to political direction could weaken the institution. According to him, the Bank of Ghana must remain neutral and focused on its mandate.
“Mr Governor, if you allow the NDC party to dictate to you how to comply with the law, you will set a precedent that will collapse the operational independence of the bank. The bank is not a political party,” he stated.
