Ghanaian evacuee from South Africa dies on arrival in Accra

A Ghanaian who was evacuated from South Africa as part of a government repatriation exercise has died shortly after arriving at the Accra International Airport.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the deceased was among 50 Ghanaians who arrived in Ghana on an Air Tanzania flight at 5:50 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026.

According to the Ministry, the passenger’s health condition started getting worse about 30 minutes before the plane landed in Accra.

A medical emergency team at the airport quickly attended to the passenger after the aircraft arrived and tried to stabilise the condition.

However, the Ministry said the efforts to save the passenger were unsuccessful. Doctors later confirmed the death at 6:55 p.m.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry said it was taking the necessary steps to inform the deceased’s family.

The remains have since been taken to the Police Hospital, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted.

The Ministry said it would provide more information about the death after formally engaging with the bereaved family.

The deceased was among Ghanaians brought back from South Africa through a government-organised evacuation exercise.

However, the Ministry did not provide details about why the evacuation was carried out or reveal the identity of the deceased.
