Gbewaa College lecturer dies after alleged military assault

A lecturer at the Gbewaa College of Education in Pusiga in the Upper East Region, Issaka Abdulai, has reportedly died following an alleged assault by military personnel operating in the Bawku area.

Mr Abdulai, who was a lecturer in the Science Department of the college, is said to have been assaulted by military personnel on the night of Friday, September 11, 2026.

In a statement issued on Saturday, September 12, the management of Gbewaa College of Education announced the death of the lecturer and expressed its grief over the incident.

“Management is saddened to announce the death of Mr. Issaka Abdulai, a lecturer in the Science Department. Mr Issaka Abdulai was beaten to death by the military in Bawku last night” the statement said.

The circumstances that led to the alleged assault and the events surrounding Mr Abdulai’s death have not been officially established.

However, sources cited by Citi News said the lecturer was allegedly apprehended while riding a motorbike during curfew hours.
His death reportedly sparked protests in Pusiga on Saturday morning, as residents took to the streets to express their anger over the incident and the conduct of military personnel in the community.

Some residents reportedly blocked roads and burned tyres during the demonstrations, disrupting movement in parts of the community.

The alleged death of the lecturer has also heightened concerns among residents about the treatment of civilians during ongoing security operations in the Bawku area.

Management of Gbewaa College of Education has expressed concern over the death of Mr Abdulai, while further details on investigations into the alleged assault and the circumstances of his death are yet to emerge.
