A 21-year-old ex-convict, Kingsford Quarshie, popularly known as “Cash Money”, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for breaking into a supermarket in Tarkwa and stealing cash and goods valued at more than GH¢54,000.
The Tarkwa Circuit Court handed down the sentence after Quarshie pleaded guilty to charges of causing unlawful damage, unlawful entry and stealing.
His accomplice, 20-year-old university student Joshua Hammond, alias “Gucci”, was also sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment for abetment.
According to the court, Quarshie, Hammond and another accomplice, identified only as Collins, who remains at large, broke into the supermarket and its warehouse after damaging burglar-proof windows.
The three reportedly stole GH¢50,000 in cash, a TM1 laptop worth GH¢3,000 and assorted provisions valued at GH¢1,927.90.
Their actions were captured by a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera installed nearby, which reportedly helped investigators identify the suspects.
Quarshie and Hammond were subsequently arrested and brought before the court, where they entered their pleas and were convicted.
The court sentenced Quarshie to eight years’ imprisonment with hard labour, while Hammond received a 12-month prison term for his involvement in the break-in.
