EOCO searches Baffour Awuah’s office, residence after questioning

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has begun searches at the office and residence of Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, following his questioning at the agency’s headquarters.

EOCO officials moved to the MP’s office and residence after he spent more than an hour answering questions from investigators on Thursday, October 1.

Baffour Awuah had earlier reported himself to EOCO after the High Court issued a warrant for his arrest on Wednesday, September 30.

He arrived at the agency’s premises with his lawyer, Samuel Atta Kyea, and several parliamentary colleagues, including Kofi Amankwah Manu, Subin MP Obiri Yeboah and former Deputy Attorney-General Joseph Kpemka.

Following the questioning, EOCO officials proceeded to the MP’s office and residence to execute the search warrant issued by the court.

The warrant was granted after EOCO told the High Court that it had exhausted reasonable efforts to secure the MP’s voluntary attendance for questioning.

The development follows an earlier attempt by EOCO officials to arrest Mr Baffour Awuah at the premises of the Accra High Court on September 23. The incident resulted in a confrontation between the officials and persons accompanying the MP.

Baffour Awuah is being investigated over alleged unauthorised financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings & Loans Company Limited.

Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, has said the investigation relates to suspected offences including financial loss, dissipation of public funds and money laundering.

The search of the MP’s office and residence forms part of EOCO’s ongoing investigations into the matter.

The exercise is being conducted under the authority of the High Court warrant, while the allegations against the MP remain under investigation.
