Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called for the vetting of three nominees for the Supreme Court to be postponed.
According to him, there is no urgent need for Parliament to rush the process because the Supreme Court currently has enough judges to carry out its work.
The Minority Leader made the call on Thursday, August 27, 2026, as Parliament prepared to vet the nominees during its emergency recall.
The nominees are Court of Appeal Justices Sophia Bernasko-Essah and Edward Amoako Asante, as well as private legal practitioner Anthony Forson Jr., a former President of the Ghana Bar Association.
Afenyo-Markin questioned why the vetting had to be completed within the short period Parliament had been recalled, arguing that the Supreme Court remains operational and continues to hear cases.
“If there is no vacancy to fill, there is certainly no emergency compelling anyone to fill it inside three days. There is no fire here,” he said.
He proposed that the Appointments Committee should instead conduct the vetting in September and submit its report when Parliament resumes in October.
The Minority Leader also rejected the argument that the judiciary’s vacation period required Parliament to act quickly. He maintained that the Supreme Court remains capable of dealing with urgent cases even during the vacation.
Afenyo-Markin stressed that the Minority was not against the consideration of the nominees but wanted Parliament to have enough time to properly examine their qualifications and suitability for the positions.
He maintained that delaying the judicial vetting would allow Parliament to conduct a more detailed and effective assessment of the nominees.
