A deputy spokesperson for former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2028 presidential bid, Dr. Ekua Amoakoh has criticised Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh over the suspension of the Chief Executive Officer of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), describing the move as misplaced and ineffective.
She says the suspension of the hospital’s CEO would not resolve operational challenges facing the facility.
In a social media post, she argued that the decision was “illegal and misguided” and said it diverted attention from what she described as systemic pressures on Ghana’s health system.
“How does suspending the CEO fix overcrowding?” she said, adding that doctors and nurses were already “treating patients in hallways and on floors” due to high patient numbers.
She urged authorities to prioritise the operationalisation of several completed health facilities in the Ashanti Region, including district hospitals at Trede and Oforikrom, as well as the Sewua regional hospital.
According to her, bringing the facilities into use would help ease pressure on Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital rather than disciplinary actions against management.
She also accused the ministry of shifting blame onto health workers and called for greater focus on improving healthcare infrastructure.
The minister recently directed the suspension of the KATH CEO following controversy over the hospital’s announcement of a temporary halt to emergency admissions, a decision which has triggered public debate over management of the facility.
