Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has called on the public to stay calm and allow the law to take its course following the arrest of the current MP, Ohene Frimpong Kwame.
Parliament, in a statement released on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, confirmed the arrest and said it was working closely with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to get more information about the situation.
The statement added that the Speaker of Parliament and the leadership of the House were in contact with the mission to understand the circumstances surrounding the detention of the Independent MP for Asante Akim North.
Speaking in an interview, Andy Appiah-Kubi stressed the importance of fairness and respect for the rule of law.
He said the MP should be treated as innocent until proven guilty.
He also warned people not to rush to conclusions or believe only one side of the story.
“International law does not allow anyone to be condemned without being allowed to be heard. He remains innocent until proven guilty, and we expect due process to be followed before any conclusions are drawn.”
“When he is given the chance to present his side and a ruling is made, then we can determine who is guilty or otherwise. For now, we should avoid rushing to condemn him or accepting only one side of the evidence while ignoring the other.
“We must uphold the principles of the rule of law and respect fundamental human rights,” he said.
